Orbit Logic (now Auria) and their subcontractor, Choocha leading AI Vision platformhave been awarded a USAF Phase II SBIR to develop the Cloud-based Automated Satellite Tactical Tasking, Collection, Processing, Exploitation and Dissemination (TCPED) (CASTT) system.

CASTT connects intelligent automated software to commercial satellites for closed-loop data gathering and analytics, providing data and finished intelligence directly to end users.

Based on high-level user-specified missionssuch as pattern of life monitoring or multi-vehicle trackingCASTT continuously and autonomously tasks satellites for data collection, analyzes the resulting data, and then issues follow-up collection tasks to the satellites based on the analyses while disseminating data and analyses directly to end users via mobile and web apps. In contrast, the current manually intensive satellite imagery intelligence process is time consuming, laborious, and slow. CASTT automation and optimization results in more timely information, better use of highly constrained resources, and better intelligence.

“Through the proliferation of satellites populating Low Earth Orbit (LEO), it will soon be possible to perform certain time-critical sensing missions from space. We are excited to work with experienced partners like Orbit Logic and Chooch towards harnessing the tremendous amount of data generated by space-based sensors and making it available in near real-time to Air Force decision makers.”

–Dr. Andre Van Rynbach, AFRL/RY

CASTT integrates Orbit Logic’s mature satellite tasking, optimized collection planning, and data dissemination software with Chooch automatic target recognition (ATR) on tactical timelines. Its cloud-based architecture provides wide, secure access and scalability to add/expand automated analysis algorithms and commercial satellite interfaces. Beyond initial applications for the USAF, CASTT is applicable for disaster response, ecological monitoring, agricultural operations, and more.

MEARS will enable collaborative robotic exploration of microgravity environments.

Orbit Logic (now Auria) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract sponsored by NASA to develop the Microgravity Environment Autonomy for Robotic Satellites (MEARS) solution. The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) is our research partner on this effort. MEARS will merge robotic asset onboard sensing/perception, autonomous planning/ response, and robust inter-asset communication strategies—into a high-reliability architecture compatible with the ROS 2 and Space ROS open software projects.

Orbit Logic’s mature Autonomous Planning System (APS) supports asset-level resource planning and decentralized planning of mission-level goals for teams of heterogeneous, networked assets. The project team at UDRI has developed a suite of flight/motion control, energy management, trajectory planning, and stochastic navigation planning technologies (with 3 granted and pending patents) in their Real-Time Adaptable Autonomy Kernel (RT-AAK) during the past years, which can be flexibly built and deployed to a variety of CPU, GPU and FPGA-based processors on flight-like computing platforms. The UDRI team will employ advanced online learning-enabled model predictive control (MPC), originally developed for an Energy Optimizer and eVTOL (electrical vertical takeoff and landing) vehicles in multiple projects, to achieve effective autonomy and AI/ML capabilities. APS and RT-AAK are modular, layered solutions that when integrated will be highly enabling for a broad set of space robotic applications (but with relevance to terrestrial robotic applications as well). The scenario we are focused on for initial architecture development involves the challenging case of a collaborative heterogeneous robotic team operating in microgravity environments such as asteroid fields, composed of many initially unknown and highly dynamic objects of interest that must be simultaneously investigated and avoided. UDRI’s Autonomous Systems Testbed in the Power and Energy Division, with real-time distributed hardware-in-the-loop and high-fidelity dynamics simulation capabilities, will be adapted and used for prototype verification and validation.

APS is a powerful technology that can be leveraged for autonomous planning in any domain. The breadth of its applications proves its flexibility; in addition to the autonomous robotic capabilities being developed in this effort, Orbit Logic has utilized APS for the autonomous operation of heterogeneous constellations of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with DARPA and AFRL, heterogeneous teams of unmanned underwater/surface/aerial vehicles (UUVs/USVs/UAVs) with the Navy, heterogeneous swarms of rovers, satellites, and atmospheric vehicles for robotic Mars exploration with astronauts-in-the-loop for Lunar exploration, and mission-adaptive formation flying control of satellite clusters, with NASA.

Orbit Logic (now Auria) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory to develop the Satellite Onboard Fault Attribution and Response (SOFAR) solution. The Space Telecommunications, Astronomy and Radiation (STAR) Laboratory in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is our research collaborator.

SOFAR will attribute faults encountered in satellite systems to their possible causes. In many cases, clues embedded in telemetry data may be so sparse that no single explanation is possible to determine. In these situations, SOFAR will develop multiple hypotheses and the relative likelihood of each. These hypotheses can be delivered to the ground operations center to inform the operators and can also be used by Orbit Logic’s onboard Autonomous Planning System (APS) to trigger/determine automated responses to mitigate the fault.

SOFAR will consume data from the hosting satellite bus, its sensors/payloads, and even remote sensors or platforms. Novel approaches developed by MIT will not just isolate the fault, but also attempt to identify its causation category, which can include: Space weather events; Application of physical or energetic effects to the platform; Failures, anomalies or degradation of the spacecraft’s hardware systems; Defects in the flight software that may emerge at unpredictable times or under unique conditions; or Cyber-attacks.

APS is a powerful technology that can be leveraged for autonomous planning in any domain. The breadth of its applications proves its flexibility; in addition to its use on this program for satellite fault management, Orbit Logic has utilized APS for the autonomous operation of heterogeneous constellations of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with DARPA and AFRL, heterogeneous teams of unmanned underwater/surface/aerial vehicles (UUVs/USVs/UAVs) with the Navy, heterogeneous swarms of rovers, satellites, and atmospheric vehicles for robotic Mars exploration, heterogeneous robotic swarms with astronauts-in-the-loop for Lunar exploration and mission-adaptive formation flying control of satellite clusters, with NASA.

Heimdall Onboard will offload operators using clusters of satellites to autonomously maintain SSA of specified collections of space objects.

Orbit Logic (now Auria) has been awarded a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) contract sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to develop a solution called Heimdall Onboard. The effort is a research partnership with the University of Texas at Austin (UT), with whom we previously developed a ground-based version of Heimdall (SSA Sensor Tasking)—a planning framework to optimize the use of ground- and space-based sensors to maximize resident space object situational awareness by using an information gain metric as a component of the tasking plan’s score.

Heimdall Onboard will enable a team of satellites in a cooperating cluster to perform fully automated Resident Space Object (RSO) custody maintenance of an operator-specified set of high-interest objects. The logic required to a) determine an agile schedule to acquire images using onboard sensors, b) detect objects in the images, c) determine orbits for those detections, d) associate the orbits with objects in the locally maintained onboard catalog, and e) adapt the sensor tasking plans dynamically based on uncertainties, sensor capabilities, and the relative viewing perspectives of the cluster members over time—will all be performed on the flight computers of the cluster elements using decentralized approaches to collaborative autonomy and data fusion.

This effort will integrate UT’s mature processing and fusion algorithms with the mature, flight-qualified version of Orbit Logic’s Autonomous Planning System (APS) that was developed for AFRL’s SaFIRE program, enhancing its decentralized collection planning to ensure that the observations being made by each satellite most effectively contribute to building an SSA picture of all RSOs of interest.

APS is a powerful technology that can be leveraged for autonomous planning in any domain. The breadth of its applications proves its flexibility; in addition to its use in this activity for autonomous orbital SSA, Orbit Logic has utilized APS for the autonomous operation of heterogeneous constellations of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites with DARPA and AFRL, heterogeneous teams of unmanned underwater/surface/aerial vehicles (UUVs/USVs/UAVs) with the Navy, heterogeneous swarms of rovers, satellites, and atmospheric vehicles for robotic Mars exploration, heterogeneous robotic swarms with astronauts-in-the-loop for Lunar exploration, and mission-adaptive formation flying control of satellite clusters, with NASA.
